Here’s Mud in yer Eye

4t Sunday of Lent – April 3, 2011

1 Samuel 16: 1b, 6-7, 10-13a, Ephesians 5: 8-14, John 9: 1-41

The readings were long this morning!  Did they put you to sleep?  (singing) Awake O sleeper, and arise from the dead, open your eyes and see the light of Christ.

A disciple of Christ must keep the faith and profess it, confidently bearing witness to it, and spreading it: “All must be prepared to confess Christ before men and to follow him along the way of the Cross, expecting human persecutions which the Church never lacks.  One must have their eyes open!

How do we do that?  Time to get some mud in yer eye.  One day at the ATL airport, the passengers had been delayed and were waiting for the pilots to show up for their flight so they could depart.  The pilot and co-pilot finally show up.  Both appear to be blind as they walk past the passengers; the pilot is using a white cane, the co-pilot with a guide dog.  Both have their eyes covered with sunglasses.

The passengers board the aircraft with some anxiety.  The engines start, and the airplane taxi’s out to the runway with some jerkiness adding anxiety and uneasiness.  They look at each other and whispering begins.

The plane finally begins accelerating rapidly, and the people sitting in the window seats recognize they have passed the normal lift off point and begin to panic.  Some passengers begin praying aloud.  As the plane gets closer and closer to the end of the runway their voices become more hysterical.

With less than twenty feet of runway left, there is a sudden change in the pitch of the shouts as everyone screams.  At that very second, the plane lifts off and is airborne.

Up in the cockpit, the co-pilot breathes a sigh of relief and says to the pilot: “You know, one of these days the passengers aren’t going to scream, and we won’t know when to lift off!”

The scripture readings today are long.  There is a reason they are so long.  Today scripture is trying to teach us about the length and extended degree humanity will go to attribute culpability which can lead to spiritual blindness.  Oh we may have perfect 20-20 eye eyesight, but spiritually we can be as blind as a bat.  Somebody just has to be at fault for every problem.

Look at how hard the people in this gospel worked to identify the culpable one.  At the on set the disciples questioned Jesus about who was at fault.  Once healed the people began to question healed blind man’s neighbors, then the Pharisees were brought in, then they all went back to the healed blind man, still his word wasn’t good enough so they rounded up the blind mans parents.  His parents were afraid and sent every one back to their blind son.  Then the Pharisees confronted the blind man again and being unhappy with his response had him thrown out.  After Jesus hears the story he confronts the Pharisee in us all.  He consoles the bind man after the Pharisees had him thrown out!  Back and forth, back and forth they went until — I am Out of breath!

One could analyze this story and draw an analogy that the people in this story were so bound and determined they would stomp through a puddle again and again to until it became a mud hole simply to satisfy human natures desire to attribute fault. We humans are sure someone is at fault, yet at the same time complain about why the water in the mud puddle we are stomping through has become so awfully muddy!  We humans will continue to make the mess worse and worse until like the passengers in plane everyone is ready to scream!

Yet in all of this mess there is hope!  In salvation history, the Lord God and in this case Jesus takes the mud we humans create through our misguided nature and turns it into light.  Jesus came to teach us that those who can not see might seeand those who see might become blind.  The lesson is clear we the people are going to go blind walking back and forth through the mud puddles of life until we open our stubborn hearts and minds to the healing light the spirit of Jesus offers us in the middle of the mud puddle.

We don’t have to look far.  Cosnider our families, our relationships with friends, community isses and yes even our national politicians as they purposely misuse the English language to vilianize their opponernt in an effort to lay blame on someone toher than the ones who created the mess in the first place.  The truth is to be avoided because the hidden within the truth is the light of Christ from which no one can hide!

How long had the man in our Gospel had been blind?  From birth, but was that twenty years or fifty years?  He could have thought of himself as a born loser.  When he was healed he could have very well said, “Twenty wasted years … fifty years … almost my whole life.”

He could have gone about the town trying to shame those who had given him nothing, during those years of begging and scrounging.  He could have demanded he be compensated for his suffering.  But no! Instead he worshiped and gave praise to Jesus, and went about giving thanks for the gift of sight and the hope of a new life.  He was filled with gratitude and focused on the rebirth of the possibilities for the future in spite of all the people who were caught up and still stomping in the mud puddle.

The Gospel story reminds us that it is Jesus who ignites dreams, kindles the light of hope, and opens eyes of the blind.  If we want to clear the muddy puddles in our family, with friends and even solve our states and nation’s muddled up mess’s, we must turn to Jesus Christ with open hearts and eyes.

So let us recapture and proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ to all those we meet.  By saying “Here’s mud in your eye.”

The Blind depending on Hearing

One day at the Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson International airport, the passengers have been delayed waiting for the pilots to show up for their flight so they can get underway.  The pilot and co-pilot finally appear.  Both appear to be blind as they walk past the passengers; the pilot is using a white cane, the co-pilot has a guide dog.  Both have their eyes covered with sunglasses.

The passengers board the aircraft with some anxiety.  The engines start, and as the airplane taxi’s out to the runway the pasengers experince some jerkyness adding he anxiety and uneasiness.  They look at each other and whisper among them begins.

The plane finally begins accelerating rapidly, and the people sitting in the window seats begin to panick.  Some passengers begin praying aloud.  As the plane gets closer and closer to the end of the runway their voices become more hysterical.

With less than twenty feet of runway left, there is a sudden change in the pitch of the shouts as everyone screams.  At that very second, the plane lifts off and is airborne.

Up in the cockpit, the co-pilot breathes a sigh of relief and says to the pilot: “You know, one of these days the passengers aren’t going to scream, and we won’t know when to take off!”

Coming “Here’s Mud in Yer Eye!” and the “Spirit” of the Tea Party Rvealed

Coming soon!  4th Sunday of Lent Already?  The gospel of Jn 9:1-41 or 9:1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38

Night is coming when no one can work.
While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
When he had said this, he spat on the ground
and made clay with the saliva,
and smeared the clay on his eyes,

I gotta get to work – Oh Holy Spirit – the idove what you have in mind for your people??

To be followed by a Tax day Tea Party Event – April 15, 2011 – the Spirit starts in the gut, makes it’s way to the brain, sinks down into the heart where it lites a fire that leaps up through the lips!

Cloudy Day – ?? Kinetic War ??

Today is a cloudy day in so many ways!  The current United States administrations policy on Libya makes the day even more cloudy.  “Ambiguous” is certainly an appropriate word to describe this new no policy.

Kinetic Wart – make no mistake – words designed to justify ambiguity – anything without clear concise meaning!  Where are you Sister David, English composition, clear concise sentence???.

Muammar Gadafi of Libya is certainly a tyrant and worse a destructive human being and a leader willing to persecute his own people.   He is in urgent need of a significant emotional event which offers to the best opportunity for him to evaluate his moral compass and change his ways.

With this new policy this nation appears to be embarking upon a sliding scale criteria list that resides only in the executive branch of governments judgement and assessment based upon a moving scale of criteria and using words with limitless meaning to avoid actually being held  accountable?

We must begin asking ourselves — Is this a Republic or do we still believe in the principle of a balance of power?

Holy Mary Mother of God pray for us.

St. Joseph pray for us.

All Holy men and women pray for us!

Aren’t the people (whose consent is required) the last hope to restore the balance of power?

Awesume – a word – Reserved for God

2nd Sunday of Lent March 20, 2011

Jesus took Peter, James and John his brother and led them up on a high mountain by themselves.  This is the traditional place of an encounter with God himself.  And he was transfigured before them; his face shinning like the sun and his clothes became as white as light reflecting the image of Jesus in His glory and divinity.  It was an awesume sight to behold!

Matthew was writing to a Jewish audience who wanted to remain faithful to Judaism and they wanted to know if becoming a disciple of Jesus was being faithful?  And behold, in this Transfiguration story Jesus is shown conversing with Moses and Elijah.  Jesus is both the fulfillment of the Law of Moses and the promised one of the Prophets as symbolized by Elijah.

In this story Peter is beside himself and wants to capture this vision and stay in this moment.  In his customary exuberance Peter suggests he make three tents.  Before he could finish this thought, a bright cloud overshadowed them and from the cloud came a voice that said.  This is my beloved son, listen to him.

Yep, this is Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the promised one who came to save us from ourselves!  Most of us know this beautiful story well.  So well in fact we might gloss over the story and not see images competing to displace the truth?   We might miss How did they get up the mountain?

Young people, children did you listen to the story?  How does this story compete with the newest DVD, iPad, think pad, Hi Definition 3 D, hi tech video devices you have at home or you see on TV?

Has anyone watched the commercial where a young handsome man walks up to some kind of iPad HD hi tech video devise and upon grasping it, is transformed into a some kind of imaginative semi alive zoom vehicle with shinning eyes that floats and maneuvers above the surface.  Inside we see the man using interactive voice and touch slew screen communications to activate optional adventure voyages into the dream world of cyber space traveling far beyond the planet earth and moon.  Click, click, slew and zoom we are high on the imaginary mountain top!  Unrerality becomes sought after as real!

Is that how we image Jesus and his disciples got up that mountain?

Grand parents and old folks, whoever you are!  Now it’s your turn.  From the Book of Genesis we hear the Lord say to Abram.  Go forth from the land of your kinfolk to a land I will show you.  Trust me – come on trust me says the Lord!

Do we realize Abram was 75 years old when the Lord told him to uproot himself and go.  Look around and see if you can find someone here who is 75 years old!  Old folks at 75 are you ready to be uprooted and make the most significant trip of your life?  At 75 Abram met God’s minimu age requierment to enter into the spiritual trust zone created by God for those willing to travel into forever.

Listen – what are the rewards for actually doing what the Lord asks?  I will make you a great nation, I will bless you, make your name great, bless those who bless you, curse those who curse you and all shall find blessing in you!

All together — Bless me father for I am a sinner and yet I am ready for this trip into salvation forever land!

Why would I draw these pictures for the young and the old?  Grand parents or parents do you have any ideas?

We are living in a world where our young are tempted daily to enter into the world of the unreal, the newest reality idol and latest cyber imagery cloud and in doing so we replace real flesh and blood people with non-living images.  Do not allow yourself or your children to be taken hostage by the image of that which can not live, love or respond and can lead one to an early spiritual death!

The transiguratyion story is about accepting a really real Jesus Christ as our savior by opneing ones soul and Listening to Him!

Mom’s and dad’s teach your children to listen to him by showing them you take time to listen!  Turn off the radio, the TV, the computer, the cell phone and every other electronic device.   It is in the silence one can finnaly encountered the really real spirit of the one who created all things!

We know the truth from scripture!  We are made of the earth brought to life by the breath of God.  It is through the flesh and blood journey, the valley of tears and the trip up the mountain that leads us to the encounter with the living breathing spirit of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only one who can save us.

It is the encounter and the discovery of the beauty of God’s creation which wakes up our spirit.  It is the living who possess the real potential to return love according to the design of God.

Trust in Jesus Christ the one who is always fully present and is speaking to us in our day and our time.  Take time to Listen to Him!

How to Find Home

Good morning HTLG&M and whoever stops by.

Humidity 100%, heat factor will exceed 100 degrees. Find a cool place to rest your soul.

A racing pigeon is gregarious by nature.  This means pigeon prefer to stay in a group or flock.  Simultaneously Homing pigeons also have a God given drive to return to it’s home and nest.  This instinctive  drive is part of it’s DNA buried in the essence of the pigeon.  A homing pigeon will literally give it’s life to return home.  But at some point to find home, the pigeon must also confront it’s instinct to stay in a group for safety purposes and break away on it’s own if it is to survive.

A successful homing pigeon eventually must be willing to overcome it’s earthly instinct fly to stay in a flock and go it alone which is against nature.

Back in ancient times (the promised land and the Roman Empire), observant humans of the day were keenly aware of the battle for survival and the dangers of mother natures elements.  Water, food and shelter were a first and foremost priority.  Making a trip into the wilderness and new lands in the search for food put ones life on the line.  Keeping in touch with the home folks, family and the local community provided a safety net.

Ancient man recognized the natural instinct a homing pigeon to return home for love of nest and home.  A natural survival partnership was formed and the homing pigeon entered the service of humanity as the first long distance communications system.  This service greatly facilitated the conquests of the Roman Empire.

The idove’s (the spirit of the homing pigeon) DNA serves as the critical life and death magnetic force that calls it home.  Each human being is created in the image of God and as such carries this same DNA.  An instinct, ability, drive and force that calls one to return home.

And amazingly we humans know where home is!  This home is a spiritual place unlike any place on earth.  One who discovers this home encounters joy, peace, fulfillment, and a realization they have found the treasure all humanity seeks and is searching for.

Every human searches and seeks to find the meaning of life and the purpose for which they were born and created.  Not surprisingly, this treasure is buried within the DNA located deep within the soul by the design of the creator.  On this earthly journey to find this treasure, one must apply similar principles to those the homing pigeon / idove must confront.

The treasure is always present and can be unlocked by one who is open to the truth.  In our flesh, we are like the homing pigeon when it comes to the journey we travel to discover our true purpose and home.  When a homing pigeon is released far from home it must first confront it’s earthly instincts and eventually be willing to break away from the flock that is unwilling to leave the release point to embark upon the journey to home.

A homing pigeon at first circles the immediate area of release.  This is a multi purpose maneuver.  It instinctively knows there is safety in numbers and it knows it will take some time to enable it’s god given homing instinct to kick in so it is reluctant by nature to leave the flock.  Simultaneously while flying in circles it searches the sky for predators.

Safety is it’s first and foremost concern.  As the homing pigeons fly’s, it is aware of the direction and intensity of the wind.  A homing pigeon will seek to fly at an altitude most conducive to providing the necessary uplift to obtain the most efficient flight conditions yet will change direction, speed and altitude to avoid a predator.

As the homing pigeon circles it’s homing device (white wattle shaped in form of a heart) located in front of it’s nose is automatically sensing the magnetic pull of the earth.   Ever heard the statement – the truth is right in front of your nose!  The homing pigeon is a really real example of that reality.

As the homing pigeon circles it is satisfying many natural concerns, safety with friends, safety in numbers, a kind a real peer pressure to stay with the group with many eyes ever on the lookout for predators and the all the while listening to the magnetic field of the earth listening to the DNA buried deep within — head for home – head for home.

As the homing pigeons circles the DNA engages   and begins to gain strength, it then stops circling and begins to weave in left and then right in flowing curves  which serve to enable it’s homing instinct to lock on to the magnetic field that ultimately calls and it trust will pull it home.

The ideacon’s behavior description of this early maneuver of the homing pigeon was described by my youth group as the ideacons dance.  And a dance it is!

Once locked on the homing pigeon begins the race home in earnest.  It will leave the flock and accelerate its pace as it locks unto the pull from home.  A homing pigeon ultimately points it’s nose toward home and the route home becomes more direct.

Along the way, like us, the homing pigeon encounters many distractions. Predators of many sorts are all along the route and the homing pigeon must be ever vigilant.  A deviation off course to avoid the predator is common.  The homing pigeon will change altitudes or swing away from danger.  A homing pigeon is constantly assessing flying conditions and looking out for predators.

All the while it it is depending upon that buried DNA that pulls it home.  A homing pigeons nature is similar to teenagers.  Teenagers and young people are gregarious.  They travel in groups and dress alike so they will be different.  Did I write that – oh yes cause it’s the truth!  Ironically they all look the same but that’s to miss the point that they want to discover the person buried within whose is like no other.

It is the natural pressure and instinct to dress alike to be different so they can discover who they are.  Many of mother natures instincts are calling deep from within their bodies even though their hormones are changing them by the day.  Their bodies know what they want, but the child hidden within hasn’t a clue – not yet!  How to cope with this God designed pressure is where the spirit / idove comes into play.

The pressure within is mounting and they do not know what to do or exactly what to search for.  They fear leaving the flock while they staunchly insist they are independent, but in truth they are afraid to stand alone.  The truth is they already know what they need to know 0 they just don’t know they know.  It is buried in their DNA just like the idove.

The ten commandments come from the truth reveled by natural law called mother nature.  It is only a secret to those who close their minds and spirits.

They just don’t know, that they already know the way home, the route to the freedom and independence they long for, the meaning of life and the purpose for which they were born.

Like the homing pigeon, at some point they have to be willing to recognize the predators that live and thrive in peer pressure.  Every body is doing it, alcohol, drugs and sex.  I don’t let my old man and woman tell me what to do!

The dangers peer pressure exerts are many and seek to hold one captive to group think.  Like the homing pigeon one must be willing to recognize the danger by listening to the voice crying out from within.  Head for home!  Head for Home!  Don’t be afraid you know the way!  Trust the DNA buried in your soul!

Trust is necessary – the magnetic filed of the truth will pull you home.  You are free if you are willing to leave the flock of friends and follow the spirit of natures truth which will carry you home.

This drive to come home can overcome blindness and deafness.  Not by sight or sound but by the spirit says the Lord (2 Corinthians 5: 7).

A homing pigeon can be blinded and it’s hearing impaired without impacting it’s ability to find home.  It my not be able to land on the home loft but it will within close proximity of it’s home loft.  A homing pigeon does not return home by recognizing the structure of the terrain on earth.  It finds home by trusting in the magnetic pull of the spirit buried within it’s DNA.

Know that God loves you!!!

Marriage February 2011

I love you HTLG&M.

I pray you will see me as a father figure one day and know I will always love you!

Throughout ancient history and even into modern times the father figure has been held in high and even perhaps highest esteem. God the Father was, has been and should always be considered sacred.

Most of us know today, God is spirit and as such God is also mother and balanced the books by giving the church the title of mother.

A humorous note: My belief on why the Catholic Church only has men in the clergy. If God had allowed women in the clergy, he knew it would be almost impossible to get men into church. Men need to think they know whats best and the fact is most of the time the women do all the work anyway.

In my opinion, men have a far greater struggle sharing their spirituality than women and that’s by God’s design. So to get men into church and openly share their spirituality, God had to apply some creative wisdom and trickery to make them think they were in charge.

Men can stand on their own two feet without a woman – think about it – show me a clergyman who came into this world without a mother, who always will hold her son up.

Humanity eventually favored the father title because of the importance of the eldest Son’s right to inheritance. Not only the cultural reality of the time but the prophetic story of the father and the son to come. The Messiah, the anointed promised one, the Suffering Servant.

Therefore, no one should be surprised in the war between the flesh and the spirit, the Father figure had to be attacked and destroyed. The father figure is the supreme being of judgment and the flesh wants no part of judgement. So the flesh must seek to destroy the father and in doing so destroys God and God’s judgement.

The flesh wants no part of right or wrong. The flesh wants only to please itself – selfishness. Never mind that that in destroying the father, one destroys everything associated with the father figure. Nothing is sacred to the flesh, the family, the church, and the culture of freedom must be convinced to take a trip into a self centered utopia.

Never mind that on this trip mothers become widows, children become orphans and single parent families and blended families create mass confusion the best and brightest behavior scientist can not unravel. The complexity factors in a blended family goes through the roof. Multiple mothers and fathers and grand fathers and grand mothers and in-laws and out laws.

So many are working against the success of the relationships. And who the heck is my daddy and does God really love me become legitimate questions for a child lost in the tangle of unintended consequences!

Look at the catholic Church – the Pope – the Holy father is under attack and priests called fathers are under attack. Not to make like of the seriousness of the failure of Catholic Bishops and their legal advisers but when compared to society there are far far more married pedophiles. But the war on the spirit is not interested in the truth.

How much evidence does one need to see that this war is unfolding before our eyes in 2010? Does anyone remember the days of the 1950’s when the most popular show was “Father Knows Best”? How far have we fallen in a short few years? In 2010 there is not a single TV show that depicts a father figure in an honorable role and one who the family turns to for leadership?

Does anyone really think that is an accident? Holliwood is the land of the where the lust of the flesh is satisfied silly! I wonder if anyone is paying attention to the “Law of Unintended Consequences”? In the 1960’s our nation began the battle to remove prayer from the schools and to make abortion legal. See how far we have come in a short period of time.

Put on your spiritual thinking cap. Divorce is now over 50% which is very misleading – why you ask – did we remove prayer from schools – well not exactly – but many went along for the ride and it has shown up in the spilt up / divorce rate because marriage was removed from it’s original scriptural base – a trinity of man, woman and God.

Remove God and the vast majority of people begin to live together before marriage and when the real breakup figure is calculated the spit up rate is over 85%. Lock God out and whose left – a human trying to replace God? Has anyone noticed 50% of the children being born today are to a single unmarried woman.

Statistics suggest the children born to single mothers suffer are far likely to drop out of school, get involved in drugs, crime and end up in jail. We have more and more young men standing on street corners mad as hell and not knowing why. The spirit that lives within those young men why they are angry but our culture doesn’t teach them how to get in touch with their inborn spirit.

The stories of ancient scripture tell humanity has cried from the beginning of time I want to know who my daddy is! Those angry young men want to know whose is my daddy? Why doesn’t my daddy love me? Where is my daddy? Why doesn’t my daddy come visit with me?

Remember the basics – God created them male and female and it was good. He made them to become one flesh. He so they would be united, one body and soul united to God himself – a trinity of persons in one.

Tell me – is it so really difficult to understand why there is so much division and polarization in our nation today. The sacred one flesh original – “it is good” package has been divided and the spirit of God has been removed from the relationship, the family and the children are walking alone while moms and dads are busy with material things. The worst is yet to come! With God out of the picture and flesh in control the question of abortion hardly penetrates the mind or spirit of many people.

Since 1962 the fertility rate of woman in the USA has been steadily dropping. Note that this fertility rate is not associated with potential but with actual live births. So with abortion, a birth could have occurred but did not. Statisticians, tell us when a cultures fertility rate drops to 1.3 births per mother, that culture can not recover. Put another way that culture’s way of life will die either peacefully or by war. In America with the aid of the war of the flesh overpowering the spirit the abortion industry has facilitated the law of unintended consequences to slap the western Jewdeo/Christian culture in the face when we finally wake to realize some other culture has taken control of our nation.

If you are a young man and woman – it is time to wake up! God gave you free will and calls you to let him love you. He calls you by the name that is music to your ears. Joy bounds forth from those who answer his call. The purpose for which you were born is to fulfill the purpose for which you were created – “to do the will of the father”. Help facilitate creation of new spiritual life in the spirit and for some maybe – just maybe an intimate trinity relationship that consists of a man and a woman participating with God that as one flesh and spirit to create new life.

Homily 26th Sunday of Ordinary Time

26th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Do you know who your god is?  Who is your god?  Are you sure who your god is?

In today’s gospel Jesus tells us about a very, very rich man.  He dressed in the finest purple garments and linen.  Purple dye was extremely rare and expensive.  It was obtained from the shellfish murex.  A purple mantle was very costly as well. Finely-woven linen was considered the height of luxury in his day.

And he must have been a very rich man who apparently didn’t need to work because he was able to feast sumptuously every day.  We could say this rich man was a connoisseur of threads and cuisine.  He prided himself in wearing the finest clothes and feasting on the finest cuisine.  We can imagine him carrying himself with grace and standing aloof among his friends, as if to say notice my fine threads.

And when he dined, I suspect he was extremely aware of those who watched as he presented each morsel of food before consuming it with great drama.  What would we say is his sin?

Being rich in it self is not a sin!!  Even being so rich one does not have to work is in itself not a sin!  Enjoying a sumptuous feast in itself is not a sin!  So if it isn’t his fine threads or the fine cuisine that were the source of his sin – what is the underlying source of his sin?  Can we name the fundamental sin of the rich man?

Could the rich man’s sin have something to do with the poor man, covered with sores, who was lying at his door step every day?  Lazarus was his name.  Lazarus is short for Eleazar. A name that means “He (whom) God helps,”  Every day this poor man was lying at the rich mans door begging for sustenance.   The poor man was not a pretty sight to behold with open sores covering his body.  The rich managed to ignore Lazarus yet the local dogs came to the poor man to lick his sores.

Lazarus was not a pretty sight to behold.  We could conclude the rich man be that he suffered from severe spiritual blindness and deafness?  The poor man Lazarus was there everyday at his doorway.  The rich man had to almost step over and walk past this pitiful Lazarus lying at his door step.  He acted like he did not exist.  He did not see or hear him even though Lazarus surely begged for food?

Laser Focus on Stealth Blindness

The rich man invented the first laser and stealth technology.  He was so focused on himself there was no room for the poor man to exist.  The rich man was focused like a laser on his fine threads and anticipating satisfying his taste buds on the fine cuisine he would enjoy each day.

Lazarus was mealy a minor distraction.   I suspect in the rich man’s mind, no one was looking at Lazarus because the world was looking at him, dressed in the finest linen.  In the rich man’s mind, even Lazarus yearned to emulate the rich mans dress and one day hoped to dine on the crumbs from the sumptuous meal he would enjoy.

I ask again, what is the rich mans sin that lies below the surface that blinds and deafens the rich mans spirit?  This rich man has a severe spiritual handicap – what is it?  We hear both men died.  The rich man is known as the one “Who Never Noticed” Lazarus was at his door every day.

The rich man, locked him out!

Listen again to the beauty of the death of Lazarus.  Jesus describes angels lifting and carrying Lazarus to the bosom of Abraham.   The poor man then rested in the bosom of Abraham.  What is described would have been clearly understood by the people of Jesus day.  It was an ancient banqueting practice, were the honored quest would recline one’s head on renowned figures breast at the banquet table.

The picture painted by Jesus puts Lazarus in the place of honor at the right hand of Abraham at the banquet in the next world.  The rich man and the poor man’s fortunes are reversed after death.  Simultaneously the rich man is suffering, his lips are parched with thirst, his tongue is hot and dry, and he is in great discomfort.

The Greek verb used here is odunao, “to undergo physical torment, ‘suffer pain.’  “The source of the suffering is fire.  Then he sees the above scenario – at last he has eyes and can see and ears to hear.  The rich man cries out to Abraham, have Lazarus dip his finger in water and come over and touch my tongue.

The rich finally confesses he was aware of Lazarus existence and calls him by name.  Abraham responds to the rich man.  “If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.” (Luke 16:31)

Again, I ask what was the rich mans sin?  What was the sin that earned him eternal damnation?  The rich man turned his threads and cuisine into god and he worship at there table.  Tough they were without life and could not save him, he worshiped them.

Do not have false gods before me.  I am the Lord thy and there is no other.  The question we are called to examine today is who is our god and who is the Lazarus standing in our door way?

I have discovered in my life, I have many gods.  So many gods in fact it can be scary.  Those who know me, know I have my deer hunting god, my racing pigeon god, my ham radio god, my gym god – I benched pressed 225 pounds the day I died, my jogging god who lead to run a marathon, my software development work god – installing the program I created in all of the busiest airports in the nation.

And new gods are being born every day.  I now have my face book and web page god to boot!   I believe there are now more gods than ever before in the history of man.

Think about all the gods families deal with every day.  Moms, dads, children have their technology battery draining gods.  We call them a computer, igames, xbox, iphone, ipod, ipad, blackberry, texting – phew!

And we still have the good old reliable TV with awful reality programs no child should watch.  Think about it, all these technology monsters without life that have no power to save us from damnation are consuming our time.

People have begun to enter and live in cyber space and often do not come up for real air.  Any wonder our nation is growing obese so fast?  Who is the Lazarus standing in our doorway?  In our day many Lazarus’s live inside of homes of active families.  They are moms, dads and children, even grandparents have been taken hostage.

Are we like the rich man and traded in living breathing people for inanimate technology that can not save us?  Children today are growing up without learning social skills and how to play or deal with real live people.

Do we have the courage to ask?  What story are we entering into?  The story of salvation history where we encounter the one true God who sent His Son to save us from our sin or are we willing to step into cyber space where real people are replaced with lifeless indulgence?

How many gods do you have?  Which of those gods can save you?

Luke 14: Humility

The word parable means to use one situation to examine a second.

Oh Lord it’s hard to humble, when your perfect in every way
I can’t wait to look in the mirror; cause I get better looking each day.
To know me is to love me, I must be a heck of a man.
Oh Lord it’s hard to be humble, when you’re perfect in every way.

Can we see the irony in the lyric’s of Mac Davis’s hit song being played out in the Gospel today?  What is the lesson Jesus Christ is trying to teach?  Is it about humility?  Is it about honor?  Or is it about salvation?

Luke tells us, everyone there was watching everyone else, including Jesus closely.  Why were they were watching so closely?  They were trying to figure out the pecking order.  They were trying to figure, the highest place of honor they could claim, without running the risk of being embarrassed by being asked to move.

In the midst of this tension, while everyone was on alert, Jesus took advantage of this teachable moment.  Jesus came to save everyone!  Jesus knew the way one acquired honor was critical to passage through the narrow gate.

So how does our definition of honor measure up against Jesus standard?

Well what was that standard?  Did anyone catch it?

Jesus used the word “Rather” twice in the Gospel?  Rather is a transition word that contrasts for us what he noticed people doing versus what he calls us to do following the same principle found in the reading from Sirach.  My child conduct your affairs with humility and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts.

Go to the lowest place! That’s easy enough is that it?  Nope there is one more rather!  Invite the poor, the cripple, the lame, the blind, all who are unable to repay into our lives.

Let me share a some food for thought. When I was in basic training at Kessler AFB, Mississippi in 1964, I lived in a barracks full of men.  No real walls, just bunk beds and men.  There I encountered a roommate, who I soon realized was inviting every soldier in our barracks to join his group each time we were allowed to go to Biloxi.

He had an open charming manner and made everyone he invited feel like an old welcomed friend who was essential to the group.  What he did was infectious, and many joined in going around from bunk to bunk to make sure no one got left out without an invitation.   I am ashamed at admit I do not recall his name.  But I would bet, he would be seated at the place of honor where ever he might go.

In 1989, the Franciscan Order accepted an invitation from the Archbishop to take over the St. Philip Benizi Parish along with the St. Gabriel mission.  At the time, St. Philip Benizi Parish had just finished building a new church, during which the community had become divided and consequently was in a serious financial situation.  One of the first actions the Franciscans took was to hold town home meetings with parishioners.

They left their place of power and went into the homes of the lowest churches.  Almost the first question out their mouth at those meetings was to ask the people, what do you want from your church?  It was the first time in my catholic life to be asked what I needed from my church, as if I might know something.  It still served as a most refreshing moment and a renewal of Baptism in faith.  They turned things upside down.  They lowered themselves into the shoes of the people.  Almost over night, those Franciscan priests set that parish and mission on fire.  The financial troubles began to evaporate.

Today at a banquet, whom might a host invite to sit at the highest place and table of honor?  Would it be Mother Theresa who lived and worked in the streets of the slums or the local bishop who lives in a mansion?

Honor comes to the one who lower themselves to serving those who can not repay.  Humility comes to those, who take the risk to get out of their comfort zone and step into the world of the hungry, the poor, the lame, the crippled and the blind.  It is while walking in their shoes we learn humility for every talent we have is pure gift from God.

Oh Lord helps us grow humble and poor in every way
We can’t stand to look in the mirror; cause we see our enemy there.
You know us, yet you love us; You must be an awesome God
Oh Lord helps us grow humble and poor in every way

Warning: This is a Grappling Match Web-Site:

This is not a Roman Catholic Church supported Web Site.  Rather this site is essentially a personal journal of one man taking a risk to open self to the view of others.

It’s primary intended audience is the author’s children and Grand Children and perhaps future generations?  It is and has been engaged in reflecting upon the Spiritual War taking place in the modern world of today.

In the writers opinion, it is best described as a on-going grappling match / written description of the on going battle between the Great Deceiver and God’s design.  Often it can be described as a close intimate encounter when one is seeking to discern the truth – a la the original test in the garden.

Grappling Explained: Main Rules, Sanctions, and History

Further it is based upon the story documented in the Book of Genesis referred to as the original Test in the Garden.  A story describing humanities initial fall into Original Sin.  The Storu –> “In the Beginning” to the Great Deceiver!  Modern man seeks to deny sin!  All the while while seeking to own the “Tree of Knowledge”!  AKA – The End Justifies the means!

Yep!  Original Sin!  Still Haunting Modern Mon
